P-51C Lope’s Hope 3rd will make its AirVenture debut this year and will be featured on Warbird Alley across from the Warbirds in Review quonset. Lope’s Hope 3rd, a P-51C mustang is immaculately restored to honor Don Lopez Sr. Lopez WWII ace and chief historical architect of the National Air and Space Museum.

Hosted by the EAA Warbirds of America, these sessions delve into an aircraft’s restoration, operation, and other aspects of owning a valued piece of history, while also spotlighting veterans by sharing realistic stories about the experience of flying the aircraft in combat or supporting the operation as a ground crew member.

D-Day 75th Anniversary Invasion Stripe Painting

The Dakota Territory Air Museum, Warbirds Living History Group and AirCorps Aviation crews will enact a Living History Display on Saturday July 27th before the airshow. Several WWII Veterans will be on hand to tell their stories during the reenactment. The current day warbird restorers and pilots, dressed in period clothing, paint the iconic black and white invasion stripes on a C-53 Skytrooper Duchess of Dakota. This aircraft is known for its vital role in cargo and paratrooper transportation on D-Day.

The Invasion Stripes, alternating black and white bands, were painted on the fuselages and wings of aircraft just prior to the D-Day Invasion to help further identify the Allied aircraft and reduce friendly fire. The order went out just a few days before the operation, so crews used mops, brooms and any other form of paint brush available. In many cases they painted by eye and the results were not as neat as many restored warbirds show today.

This event was conceptualized by Pat Harker and organized by AirCorps Aviation who wanted to thank Jay for the opportunity to digitize his incredible collection of manuals to ensure the entire warbird industry doesn’t lose this tremendous resource. Please join us and thank Jay for his years of dedication and service to warbirds.

Jay Wisler, of Tampa, Florida, started selling World War II warbird parts in 1982 to supplement his paycheck from Anheuser-Busch. When the company closed its Tampa brewery in 1995, Jay became a full-time parts dealer, traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, South America, and Europe to buy inventories of aircraft parts for his business, Warbird Parts and Memorabilia. Jay was recently inducted into the EAA Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Sharon, have been married for 41 years, and they have a daughter.

Aeroscan uses state-of-the-art technology that allows for accurate scans of parts, both big and small, that can be used for the fabrication of new parts and inspection of original parts. Our process saves both time & money, and produces highly accurate results compared to traditional methods.

With the addition of the 3D scanner to AirCorps Aviations machinery list, we can now digitally model complex parts, drawn with the old slide rule on pencil and paper, very accurately and efficiently.

AirCorps Library is a collection of WWII and legacy aircraft resources delivered to users through an innovative platform designed for online viewing. The searchable drawings and blueprints, as well as design, flight, maintenance and restoration manuals, are all quickly accessible at high resolution. Both the research work and effort to continually organize resources and information to improve their world class restorations led AirCorps Aviation to establish this library of hosted resources. Now others can benefit from their work!
